Weaving a Legacy: How M. Sundardas & Sons Continues to Shape Modern Textile Manufacturing

Jagdeesh M Sunder, MD, Sundarsons

Established in 1952, the Salem-based company has evolved from a fabric manufacturer into a comprehensive fashion development and supply chain partner, serving diverse markets with specialised woven fabrics tailored to global buyer requirements.

At the heart of the company’s success lies its expertise in woven fabrics. Its portfolio spans greige, yarn-dyed, solid, printed, and over-printed fabrics, supported by advanced weaving capabilities that include herringbone twills, ripstop, box cord, Swiss dot constructions, and patented weaving methods.

What distinguishes M. Sundardas & Sons is its integrated understanding of textile manufacturing. The company emphasises that its knowledge extends from fibre selection and spinning to weaving and fabric development, enabling it to deliver products that align with designers’ visions while maintaining consistent quality standards. Its expertise encompasses both natural and man-made fibres, supported by collaborations with suppliers of materials such as viscose, modal, lyocell, linen, and flax fibres.

The company reports that its spinning operations utilise machinery from leading manufacturers, including LMW, Trützschler, and Rieter, covering every stage from blow room and carding to draw frames, speed frames, and ring frames. On the weaving side, the facility operates specialised rapier, airjet, and Sulzer machines capable of producing approximately 75,000 metres of fabric per day, supported by a fleet of more than 400 machines. The company also highlights its adherence to recognised industry frameworks such as Higg, SLCP, and OEKO-TEX.

Beyond manufacturing, sustainability has become a defining pillar of the company’s long-term vision. The company’s commitment to renewable energy began with the installation of its first windmill in 1985 and has since expanded to include solar power. Today, the company states that nearly 50% of its energy consumption comes from green energy sources, with an ambition to increase that share to 75% by the financial year 2028–29.

Associated with TENCEL™, Lenzing, Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Organic Content Standard (OCS), Birla Cellulose, Cotton made in Africa, and Confidence in Textiles (OEKO-TEX), the company is well versed in evolving sustainability and quality expectations.

“For over seven decades, our journey has been guided by a simple belief: combine technical excellence with innovation and sustainability to create fabrics that deliver lasting value for customers.”
