Maya Tata Set to Spearhead Westside's Digital & Global E-commerce Growth

Maya Tata, the youngest daughter of Noel Tata, is expected to take charge of Westside’s online business and international e-commerce operations, marking a significant step in Trent Ltd.’s next phase of omnichannel expansion and global retail ambitions.

The anticipated leadership move comes at a pivotal moment for the Tata Group retailer, following Noel Tata’s announcement during Trent’s 74th Annual General Meeting that it would be his final AGM as Chairman after nearly three decades of leadership.

“As you might be aware, this will be my last Annual General Meeting as Chairman,” Noel Tata, 69, told shareholders, signalling the beginning of a new leadership era for one of India’s most successful fashion retail businesses.

A Digital-First Retail Leader

At 37, Maya Tata represents the new generation of Tata leadership, bringing with her a strong blend of expertise in digital commerce, consumer retail and financial services. An alumna of the University of Warwick and Bayes Business School, London, she holds academic credentials in psychology and marketing, complemented by a master’s degree in marketing.

Unlike many next-generation business leaders, Maya has built her career by working across multiple Tata Group companies. She began her professional journey at Tata Capital before moving to Tata Digital, where she played an active role in strengthening the group’s digital commerce ecosystem through initiatives focused on customer acquisition, online retail and platform development.

Her experience also aligns closely with Tata Group’s broader digital transformation strategy, under which Tata Sons invested nearly ₹24,000 crore to create an integrated consumer ecosystem spanning Tata Neu, BigBasket, Croma, Tata 1mg and several other consumer-facing businesses.

Driving Westside’s Next Growth Phase

Industry observers believe Maya Tata’s digital expertise could play a crucial role as Westside accelerates its omnichannel strategy and explores new international e-commerce opportunities.

Westside continues to be Trent’s flagship fashion retail brand, accounting for an estimated 40 per cent of the company’s overall revenue. From its humble beginnings with a single store in Bengaluru, the brand has grown into one of India’s leading fashion retail chains, offering apparel, beauty, footwear and home products across premium and mid-market segments.

Together with value fashion brand Zudio, Westside has been instrumental in Trent’s exceptional growth trajectory, positioning the company among India’s fastest-growing listed retailers.

Looking ahead, Trent remains firmly focused on network expansion, with plans to open around 50 new Westside stores every year, following the addition of 52 outlets during FY26. As consumer shopping increasingly shifts towards integrated online and offline experiences, Maya Tata’s expected role is likely to strengthen Westside’s digital capabilities while supporting the brand’s long-term international growth aspirations.
