Marks & Spencer (M&S) has announced the appointment of Roger Burnley CBE, former Chief Executive Officer of Asda, as Non-Executive Director, effective 1 December 2025. The strategic appointment underscores M&S’s commitment to reinforcing its leadership bench as it enters the next phase of its Reshaping for Growth strategy.
Burnley, who also previously served as Chief Operating Officer at Asda and Retail & Operations Director at Sainsbury’s, brings decades of experience in UK grocery, retail operations, and supply chain transformation. He currently serves as a Non-Executive Director on the board of Pets at Home Group plc.
Upon joining M&S, Burnley will also become a member of the Audit & Risk and Nomination Committees.
The appointment comes amid a series of senior leadership changes at M&S. Earlier this month, the retailer named Paula Bricks, formerly Store Experience Director at COS, as its new Fashion, Home & Beauty Retail Director, effective November 2025. Bricks, with nearly three decades of experience at COS and H&M, is recognised for her transformative work in enhancing store experiences and aligning brand identity with operational excellence.
Meanwhile, Chairman Archie Norman has extended his tenure beyond the standard nine-year term outlined under the UK Corporate Governance Code — signalling continuity and strategic stability as M&S continues its growth transformation journey.
