Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) is recognized as an effective, efficient and GESI proactive institution for the promotion and development. As custodian of a sector that employs the second largest workforce in the country including a large number of women AEPC signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), with Marks & Spencer, India. The aim is providing outreach support to Project Power to promote gender equality in the Indian apparel industry workplaces with its massive network of exporters and manufacturing units.
With the larger objective of creating just and equal workplaces and in turn equal societies and perception, the initiative is to help magnify the outcome to reach the 11.2 million workforces though its members. Project Power (Providing Opportunities to Women with Equal Rights), will be implemented by Change Alliance and Swasti Health Crystal to address gender issues and empower women to have skills and confidence to take up leadership roles, contributing to safe and gender equal society. The MoU is valid for three years to start with.
On the signing of the notion on 3rd January, HKL Magu, Chairman, AEPC and Nidhi Dua, Country Manager M&S, India were seen signing the agreement. The AEPC 2019 desk calendar based on the theme of gender equality was also unveiled on the occasion, under the initiative.
“As custodians of the sector that employs the second largest work force in the country and a large women work force, we are aware that AEPC shoulders a huge responsibility in development of gender equal workplaces. We are proud providers of over 3 billion USD wages to the Indian women workforce. We look at this partnership with Marks &Spencer as a great opportunity to support the dissemination of such an initiative and help magnify the outcome to reach an 11.2 million workforce through our member exporters. I promise our unstinting support towards making this a countrywide movement”, said HKL Magu on the initiative.
