Wage protests continue to impact Cambodian garment industry. In the latest upsetting incident, more than 200 garment workers of a factory located in the national capital Phnom Penh, has hit the streets over non-payment of their dues. The issue is no different from the previous ones as the owner of the factory fled away, yet again.
The name of the factory is LIDA Garment, as reported.
A worker told local media, “We generally get our salaries on 10th. But when we didn’t see our factory owner, we felt something was wrong. We didn’t see our Chinese team leaders as they too disappeared suddenly, so we decided to protest.”
Reportedly, Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training Officials met the protesting workers to help then resolve the issue.
The Labour Department is now investigating the matter. It is being said that the owner of the unit is actually a sub-contractor and has an agreement to supply to a big international firm.
It is pertinent to mention here that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said his Government spent US $ 22 million on missing wages of factory workers.
