Industrial Unrest Escalates in Noida Over Wage Hike Demands

Industrial Unrest Escalates in Noida Over Wage Hike Demands

Violence, Arson and Traffic Chaos Disrupt City

Tensions in Noida escalated dramatically on Monday as protests by industrial workers demanding wage hikes turned violent across multiple industrial clusters, disrupting normal life and raising concerns across the manufacturing ecosystem.

What began as a peaceful demonstration over the past three to four days intensified into large-scale unrest, particularly in the Noida Phase 2 Industrial Area, where agitated workers set vehicles on fire and clashed with police forces. Authorities were compelled to use tear gas to disperse the crowd as the situation spiraled out of control.

The Phase 2 industrial hub witnessed the worst of the violence, with protestors resorting to arson and stone-pelting at law enforcement personnel. Despite heavy deployment, police faced significant challenges in controlling the swelling crowds. The incident marks one of the most intense episodes of industrial unrest in the region in recent times.

The agitation also severely impacted traffic movement. At the Sector 1 Roundabout, protestors blocked key arterial roads, leading to massive congestion on routes connecting Noida to Delhi. Commuters were stranded for hours as long queues of vehicles brought traffic to a near standstill across several stretches.

District Magistrate Medha Rupam had earlier appealed for calm and urged workers to avoid confrontation. However, the appeal failed to resonate with protestors, who continued their agitation unabated, drawing criticism toward administrative preparedness and response.

Workers’ Key Demand: Immediate Wage Revision

Protesting workers have cited prolonged stagnation in salaries as the primary cause of unrest. With inflation impacting daily living, they are demanding immediate wage revisions from companies operating in the region. Worker representatives have indicated that protests will continue if demands are not addressed promptly.

According to the police media cell, adequate deployment has been ensured across industrial zones under the commissionerate. Senior police and administrative officials are present on the ground, closely monitoring the situation. Authorities stated that efforts are ongoing to engage with workers and restore order, with minimal use of force to maintain law and order.

Minimum Wage Clarification & Revised Interim Rates (Effective 1 April 2026)

In recent days, several misleading messages have been circulating on social media claiming that the minimum wage for workers has been fixed at ₹20,000 per month. This information is incorrect and not supported by any official notification.

The Government of India is currently in the process of implementing new labour codes, under which a national “floor wage” is being considered. The objective is to create a uniform base for minimum wages across the country, ensuring fair and just compensation for workers. However, this process is still underway and has not resulted in any ₹20,000 mandate.

At the state level, the Government of Uttar Pradesh has already notified revised interim minimum wages, effective from 1 April 2026, after due consultation with industry bodies, worker representatives, and other stakeholders. These revisions aim to balance the needs of both industry and labour while ensuring economic sustainability.

The government has also emphasized that all decisions are being taken after careful consideration of suggestions and objections from all parties to maintain a practical and balanced approach.

Additionally, authorities have assured:

  • Strict law and order measures to prevent disruptions
  • Legal action against misinformation and unlawful activities
  • Protection of industry interests, including proper FIRs for damages (to support insurance claims)
  • Continued dialogue between industry and labour representatives

Employers are advised to:

  • Follow statutory compliance including wages, overtime, bonuses, and social security
  • Display updated wage rates at factory premises
  • Ensure smooth and secure entry of workers

The government has also urged all stakeholders to rely only on official sources of information and avoid spreading or acting upon unverified news.

Revised Minimum Wages (Monthly – Including DA)

(Effective 1 April 2026 – Interim Rates)

Category Gautam Budh Nagar & Ghaziabad Other Municipal Corporation Areas Other Districts
Unskilled ₹13,690 ₹13,006 ₹12,356
Semi-skilled ₹15,059 ₹14,306 ₹13,591
Skilled ₹16,868 ₹16,025 ₹15,224

Conclusion

While the industry continues to navigate economic and operational challenges, the government remains committed to maintaining a balance between worker welfare and industrial growth. With revised wages now in place and security measures strengthened, industries can resume operations with confidence and clarity.

Industry Impact Perspective (Perfect Sourcing Insight):
The unrest in Noida’s industrial belt—home to a significant number of garment, textile, and accessory manufacturing units—could have short-term implications on production schedules, supply chain continuity, and order fulfillment timelines. Stakeholders across the sourcing and export ecosystem will be closely monitoring developments, especially with ongoing and upcoming production cycles critical for global buyers.

We sincerely regret the disruption caused and understand the concerns it created. The situation has now been addressed with strong administrative action, improved security measures, and wage revisions. With clarity established and safeguards in place, we encourage resumption of operations and assure continued support from our side at every step. All factories were closed in safeguard and interest of everyone today, however, it is expected that by tomorrow things will get back to normal.
