Speaking exclusively to Perfect Sourcing, Tyuyosi Kawamura, Managing Director of Brother Machinery Asia Ltd, reflected on the company’s remarkable journey and vision for the future.
For Brother, India has always been more than a market—it’s a hub for collaboration and technological advancement. From building early sales channels to creating a strong technical service network, the company has empowered its agents, dealers, and engineers to deliver excellence across the apparel manufacturing landscape.
“Industrial sewing is a B2B business,” said Kawamura. “It’s not just about selling machines—it’s about providing the right service and solutions to help our customers improve productivity, efficiency, and quality.”
Reinventing Quality through Intelligence
Over the last decade, the meaning of quality in sewing machinery has evolved dramatically. Once centered on performance and durability, today’s manufacturers seek integrated, intelligent, and connected systems. Brother’s latest models reflect this shift—IoT-enabled, automation-ready machines designed to enhance output while reducing downtime.
“Our high-end machines now come with built-in IoT capabilities,” Kawamura shared. “Without any additional devices, users can collect and analyze production data via Wi-Fi. That’s how we’re enabling smarter manufacturing.”
Expanding Horizons: Non-Apparel and Technical Textiles
While apparel remains Brother’s foundation, the company is making significant strides into non-apparel segments such as automotive (airbags, seatbelts) and leather goods (shoes, bags)—industries that demand unmatched precision and reliability.
“In automotive, quality is directly linked to human lives,” Kawamura noted. “That’s where our technology truly matters. We offer solutions that not everyone can replicate.”
Despite global turbulence from trade disruptions, Brother remains optimistic. With rising domestic demand and resilient export potential, the company believes India’s textile and garment industry is poised for strong growth.
“Yes, the U.S. tariff situation has created challenges,” he admitted. “But the domestic market is growing fast. We see both export and domestic segments thriving in the coming years.”
Innovation at the Core: AI and Sensor-Driven Precision
Brother’s latest breakthroughs feature sensor-assisted machine calibration, minimizing manual intervention and ensuring consistent accuracy. Engineers can now view and correct adjustments digitally, a step closer to fully AI-integrated sewing solutions.
“We’ve added sensors to key components so engineers can make real-time adjustments,” explained Kawamura. “Even while running, the machine can alert operators for corrections—saving time and ensuring accuracy.”
Looking Ahead: A Smarter Tomorrow
As Brother moves into its next growth phase, its focus is clear—IoT integration, automation, and AI-driven efficiency across both apparel and non-apparel sectors. Supported by robust R&D in sewing, printing, and machine tools, the company aims to lead India’s apparel manufacturing digital transformation.
Celebrating 25 years of excellence in India, Kawamura—who took over as MD six months ago—expressed confidence in the future.
“India, along with Bangladesh and Pakistan, will continue to be our most important markets in the next five years,” he concluded. “With local capability and global innovation, Brother is ready for the next chapter.”
