Darshan Mehta, the former President and CEO of Reliance Brands Ltd. (RBL), passed away on Wednesday, April 9, at the age of 60. Widely regarded as a pioneer of India’s modern luxury and lifestyle retail sector, Mehta’s career spanned over two decades of transformational leadership that reshaped the industry.
Mehta joined Reliance Brands at its inception in 2007, and for 17 years, led the company through an era of explosive growth. Under his stewardship, RBL became a powerhouse in India’s premium retail space, forging partnerships with more than 90 global fashion and lifestyle brands.
Thanks to his bold vision, names like Valentino, Versace, Armani, Zegna, Bottega Veneta, Jimmy Choo, Muji, Coach, Boss, and Pottery Barn found a home in India. His foresight not only brought international brands to Indian high streets but also bridged the gap between global luxury houses and India’s evolving consumer base.
In early 2024, Mehta stepped down from his executive roles, formally concluding a legendary chapter. Yet his relationship with RBL endured—he transitioned into a mentor role and continued contributing as a non-executive board member, sharing strategic insight and institutional knowledge.
Before Reliance, Mehta served as President of Arvind Brands Ltd. (2001–2007), where he helped launch iconic sportswear brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Gant, and Nautica in India. Earlier in his career, the chartered accountant and cost & works accountant began at Price Waterhouse, and later rose to senior leadership at Trikaya Grey Advertising (now part of WPP), gaining expertise in branding and communication—skills that proved invaluable in his retail journey.
Industry peers describe Mehta as a visionary with sharp business instincts, a deep respect for brand heritage, and an uncanny ability to anticipate market shifts. He was a rare leader who combined creativity with operational discipline, leaving behind a standard few can match.
His untimely demise has left the Indian retail and business communities in shock. Tributes are pouring in from across the industry, honoring not just the man, but the legacy he built and the paths he paved.
Darshan Mehta’s influence will be felt for generations to come—his legacy isn’t just in the brands he brought to India, but in the future he envisioned and helped create for modern Indian retail.
