Manohar Lal Khattar Assures Support to Panipat’s Textile Industry Amid Export Challenges

Former Haryana Chief Minister and Karnal MP Manohar Lal Khattar reaffirmed the Union government’s commitment to safeguarding the textile and handloom industry in Panipat, popularly known as India’s “Textile City”.

Speaking at a press conference at the BJP’s Panipat district office Shyam Kamal on Saturday, Khattar highlighted both the opportunities and challenges faced by the region’s textile sector.

The Panipat textile and handloom industry boasts an annual turnover of 50,000–60,000 crore, with exports contributing nearly 20,000 crore. Its signature products — handloom items, bed sheets, cushion covers, and mats — are shipped to Western markets including the USA, UK, and Europe. Notably, U.S. retail giants alone account for more than half of these exports.

However, the industry has been grappling with global headwinds. Already strained by the Russia–Ukraine conflict and instability in West Asia, Panipat’s exporters were further hit by the imposition of a 50% tariff on Indian goods under the Trump administration.

Khattar acknowledged these difficulties but stressed that the Centre is actively pursuing measures to cushion the sector. “Losses are part of any business, but the Union government is committed to protect the tariff-hit industry and is taking coercive decisions, of which the GST rejig is one of the steps,” he said.

He pointed out that the recent changes in GST slabs have reduced the prices of certain textile products, opening greater opportunities in the domestic market. “If the industry is facing challenges in exports, they will be able to sell more in the domestic market. There has been a push to promote Swadeshi, which will also benefit. The motive of every business is to sell its product, even if they have to alter the item as per the circumstances,” Khattar added.

Industry stakeholders are hopeful that with government support and a strong domestic demand base, Panipat’s textile sector will continue to maintain its position as one of India’s leading hubs for handloom and home furnishing exports.
