Crafted for the Future: Union Minister Giriraj Singh Inaugurates a Vision for Sustainable Craft

Union Minister of Textiles Shri Giriraj Singh inaugurated Crafted for the Future, an exhibition celebrating India’s rich craft traditions and their relevance in sustainable, contemporary living. The inauguration took place in the presence of Ms. Amrit Raj, Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles; Ms. Radhika Kaul Batra, Chief of Staff, United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office, India; Ms. Padmavati Dwivedi, Ecological Restorer; and Swami Prem Parivartan (Peepal Baba), Founder, Give Me Trees Trust.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Giriraj Singh noted that today’s youth are engaging deeply with traditional crafts and reinterpreting them into contemporary products suited for global audiences. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting artisans and taking India’s diverse crafts to international markets through focused facilitation and policy support.

Crafted for the Future is a 10-day exhibition held as part of National Handicrafts Week and will remain open with free entry until 21 December 2025. The third edition of the Weave the Future series, the exhibition places emphasis on everyday material culture, highlighting the intrinsic link between communities, their environments, and the materials they use. It brings together artisans and material innovators from across India, showcasing practices rooted in ecological balance, regional identity, and material intelligence.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Amrit Raj highlighted that keeping India’s craft wisdom alive is about recognising craft as a living force shaping the future. Visitors can experience immersive installations, a curated craft marketplace, film screenings, demonstrations, conversations, and hands-on workshops across diverse craft disciplines—encouraging deeper public engagement with material origins and craft-led pathways to sustainable living.
