Bangladesh releases official gazette notification on minimum wage

Bangladesh has officially issued a gazette notification which states that the new minimum monthly wage of around 4 million readymade garment (RMG) factory workers will be BDT 8,000 or US $ 95.

Further, different basic pays and house rents, BDT 600 medical allowance, BDT 350 for conveyance and BDT 900 food allowance have also been reportedly included in the minimum wages.

State Minister for Labour Mohammad Mujibul Haque had announced the new wage structure on September 13 that will have 7 grades for garment workers and 4 for other staff.

The minimum basic salary for the seventh grade is BDT 4,100 and house rent is BDT 2,050. Including allowances for medical, conveyance and food, it is BDT 8,000.

The minimum wage for a Grade 1 workers is BDT 17,510.

Notably, the new wage is 51 percent more than BDT 5,300, set on December 1, 2013.
