The Federation of Indian Art Silk Weaving Industry (FIASWI) has solicited the ministry of textiles to provide financial assistance to weaving units in Surat under the Technological Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS) . The subsidies under the scheme has been reduced 30% to 10% , which should be restored to 30% .
Delay in the release of funds in TUFS is robbing thousands of jobs which would otherwise be generated .
22,000 weaving units in Surat with more than 4.5 lakh power looms can generate employment for more than 2.5 lakh people . Most of these units are micro , small and medium enterprises and are facing issues related to TUFS scheme . FIASWI also raised concerns over high rejection rates of applications under TUFS .
Textile industry provides the highest employment in the country after agriculture .Surat , an important textile hub produces 90% man – made fibres . Intense and persistent support from the centre as well as the state is required to enhance productivity and increase effectiveness of the textile industry in global arena . GST and loaded complexities of paper work is making the functioning of textile industries irksome and they hope the Govt to solve their problems .
