India to Launch Rs. 900 Cr Silk Projects in North East

Textile manufacturing hub, India is mulling silk projects valuing Rs. 900 crore in the North East region.

The Government aims to empower farmers and weavers in the region. India’s Union Textiles Minister Smriti Zubin Irani also echoed the same at the launch of Integrated Large Scale Eri Farming Project in Arunachal Pradesh under North East Region Textile Promotion Scheme (NERTPS), recently.

Financial support will be given to 4,000 beneficiaries under the scheme in the state. Papumpare, East Kameng, Siang, East Siang and West Siang districts will be covered in the initial phase.

At present, 27,000 looms and 33,000 handloom weavers are there in Arunachal Pradesh.

In case, a registered weaver wants to upgrade the old loom, 90 percent funding will be provided under the scheme.

The Minister also made certain that skill training will be imparted to the sericulture farmers and weavers under Samarth Scheme. This will help them build capacity in the textile industry.
