Fast Retailing has appointed James Kelly as Global Chief Executive Officer of Theory, placing the retail executive at the forefront of the brand’s global operations, commercial strategy and international expansion. The appointment was announced on Wednesday and marks a leadership transition as the company continues to strengthen its premium fashion portfolio.
“It is an honor to lead Theory, a brand with an enduring legacy of timeless design, exceptional quality and New York creativity,” remarked James. “Together with our talented teams, we will continue building on that foundation by delivering exceptional product and experiences for our customers globally.”
In his new position, Kelly will oversee the global headquarters and commercial operations of both Theory and Helmut Lang, along with initiatives aimed at accelerating international growth. He will be based at Theory’s New York office, succeeding Dinesh Tandon, who has moved into the role of CEO of Theory China and Global Co-Chief Operating Officer.
Kelly brings extensive experience within Fast Retailing, having joined Theory in 2022 as US Chief Financial Officer before taking on additional responsibilities as Global Co-Chief Operating Officer. During his tenure, he played a key role in advancing the brand’s direct-to-consumer strategy while overseeing finance, planning and procurement functions across the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe.
Before joining Theory, Kelly held several senior positions within Fast Retailing, the Japanese retail group that owns Uniqlo. His experience includes contributing to the expansion of Uniqlo’s early US operations and subsequently leading market expansion initiatives in Canada as Chief Financial Officer of Uniqlo Canada.
His appointment brings financial management expertise, operational experience and international market development capabilities to Theory’s global leadership. His familiarity with both the Theory brand and Fast Retailing’s broader retail ecosystem is expected to support the company’s commercial priorities and continued development across international markets.
The leadership transition also reflects a redistribution of responsibilities across Theory’s global business, with Tandon taking on a greater focus on China while Kelly assumes leadership of the brand’s worldwide operations.
As competition intensifies across the global fashion retail sector, Theory’s leadership structure will play an important role in shaping its growth strategy, strengthening its direct-to-consumer business and expanding its international presence.
