Indian textile minister Smriti Irani unfurls ‘Fabric of Unity’

India’s Union Textile Minister Smriti Zubin Irani unfurled the ‘Fabric of Unity’ on the birth anniversary (October 31, 2018) of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first ever Deputy Prime Minister of the country and a freedom fighter, in Gurugram, Haryana.

The unity fabric unveiling programme was organised by India’s trade body Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) to celebrate the country‘s textile industry.

At the event, the textile minister asked AEPC to put together the entire history and the textile designs of the then princely states which were united into the Indian Union by Sardar Patel.

“Indian textiles have played an important role in the Indian freedom movement and what can be a better example of Unity in diversity than the Indian textile heritage,” HKL Magu, Chairman, AEPC averred.

The Fabric of Unity is an event to relish Indian textiles. Magu added that the Father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi regarded khadi as the material embodiment of an ideal that represented freedom on one hand and a feeling of self-reliance and economic self-sufficiency on the other.
