Carrefour Enters India with Apparel Group, Opens Flagship Hypermarket in Greater Noida

French retail major partners with Apparel Group for India entry; nationwide expansion planned

French retail giant Carrefour has entered the Indian market in partnership with Dubai-based Apparel Group, opening a 50,000-square-foot flagship hypermarket at H&S Mall in Greater Noida.

The launch marks the beginning of an ambitious India expansion strategy for the Carrefour brand, with the partners looking to build a nationwide retail presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing consumer markets. According to Gulf News, India’s retail market is projected to reach $2.36 trillion by 2030.

For Apparel Group, the move represents a significant diversification beyond its established lifestyle and fashion retail portfolio. The company plans to leverage its understanding of the Indian market while adapting Carrefour’s international retail model to local consumer preferences.

Nilesh Ved, Chairman of APPCORP Holding and Owner and Chairman of Apparel Group, said the group studied successful Middle Eastern retail models, including the combination of shopping malls and Carrefour hypermarkets, before adapting the approach for India.

The partners recognise that India’s vast and diverse consumer market requires a localised approach. Differences in languages, states, regulations and consumer behaviour mean that the business model will need to be adapted market by market.

Patrick Lasfargues, Executive Director of International Partnerships at Carrefour, described India as one of the world’s most dynamic consumer markets and said the partnership combines Carrefour’s global expertise with Apparel Group’s local market knowledge.

The entry also comes as Indian consumers increasingly combine physical shopping with digital and quick-commerce options. Despite the growth of rapid-delivery platforms, Apparel Group believes large-format physical retail continues to have a strong role in India’s evolving consumption landscape.

The Carrefour-Apparel Group partnership could create opportunities across India’s wider retail ecosystem, including local sourcing, private labels, food and non-food manufacturing, supply-chain services and consumer products.

For Indian suppliers, the arrival of another major international retail platform could potentially expand access to large-scale retail procurement and strengthen demand for globally competitive, quality-driven and locally sourced products.

The Greater Noida launch therefore represents more than a new hypermarket—it signals another major international retail brand looking to participate in India’s long-term consumption story.
